Retaining Wall Guide: When You Need One and What It Costs

If your yard has a slope, an eroding section, or a garden bed that keeps washing away, a retaining wall might be the answer. Done right, they add visual interest, create usable space, and increase property value.

When Do You Need a Retaining Wall?

  • Soil erosion on slopes — If soil washes downhill during heavy rains, a retaining wall holds it in place.
  • Creating level areas — Many Metro Manila properties, especially in hilly parts of QC and Caloocan, have slopes that make yards unusable. Walls create flat terraces.
  • Protecting foundations — If your house sits below a slope, soil pressure can damage your foundation over time.
  • Raised garden beds — Low retaining walls (under 60 cm) create elevated planting areas.

Types of Retaining Walls

Concrete Block Walls (CHB)

Cost: P3,000 - P6,000 per sqm of wall face. Most common and cost-effective. Hollow blocks reinforced with rebar and grout. Can be finished with stucco, paint, or stone veneer. Excellent for walls up to 1.5 meters.

Natural Stone Walls

Cost: P5,000 - P12,000 per sqm of wall face. Stacked natural stone creates a timeless look. Can be dry-stack for walls under 60 cm or mortared for taller walls. Best for decorative applications. Pairs with landscape design.

Poured Concrete Walls

Cost: P4,000 - P8,000 per sqm of wall face. Strongest option for tall walls (over 1.5 meters). Requires formwork, rebar, and professional engineering. Common for structural applications.

Gabion Walls

Cost: P3,500 - P7,000 per sqm of wall face. Wire cages filled with rocks. Excellent drainage, environmentally friendly, industrial-modern aesthetic. Flexible — they shift with ground movement instead of cracking.

Typical Project Costs

  • Low garden wall (under 60 cm, 5-10m long): P15,000 - P40,000
  • Medium wall (60cm - 1.2m, 5-10m long): P35,000 - P80,000
  • Tall structural wall (over 1.2m, 5-10m long): P60,000 - P150,000+

Important Considerations

  • Drainage is critical — Every retaining wall needs drainage behind it. Without weep holes or a French drain, water pressure can cause failure.
  • Foundation depth matters — The footing should be buried at least 1/3 of the wall height below grade.
  • Permits may be required — Walls over 1 meter typically require a building permit.
  • Don't DIY tall walls — Anything over 60 cm involves significant soil forces and should be professionally built.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a retaining wall cost per meter in Metro Manila?

Costs range from P6,000 to P15,000 per linear meter, depending on height and material. A 60 cm concrete block wall costs P6,000-P8,000/meter. A 1.2m stone wall runs P10,000-P15,000/meter, including materials, labor, and basic drainage.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

Walls over 1 meter high generally require a building permit. Walls under 1 meter typically don't, but HOA approval may be required in subdivisions. For walls over 1.5 meters, a structural engineer's design is strongly recommended.

How long does a retaining wall last?

A properly built concrete block wall lasts 50-100 years. Natural stone walls can last even longer. The key to longevity is proper drainage behind the wall and a solid foundation.
