A river valley town below the Sierra Madre
San Mateo is a municipality, not a city, in the Marikina Valley. It borders Quezon City to the west, Marikina and Antipolo to the south and Rodriguez to the north. The Marikina River runs through its western side and the Nangka River through the south, while the east climbs into plateaus and Sierra Madre foothills, from about 8 metres above sea level to over 400.
That range shapes every garden job here. Yards in the low barangays near the rivers need planting that copes with floods, and foothill lots need walls and drainage before much planting. Most of the town is now residential, though the old floodplains were once grazing land and some poultry and piggery farms remain. We reach San Mateo from Quezon City on the Batasan-San Mateo Road.

Flood history along the rivers
Typhoon Ondoy in 2009 put most of San Mateo under water, and Typhoon Pedring in 2011 flooded Santa Ana, Banaba and Ampid. In November 2020, floodwater covered the bridge in Barangay Banaba. Tree permits for a Rizal municipality
San Mateo is in Rizal, under DENR CALABARZON, and permits to cut naturally grown trees are issued at the DENR regional level. Your barangay captain's certificate of no objection is part of the application. Parts of the town lie inside the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape, declared in 2011, where protected area rules apply. Permits are not included in our price.

The east of San Mateo climbs into the Sierra Madre foothills, and Timberland Heights started construction as a mountain resort development in 2003.
