How to Tell If a Tree Is Dangerous (7 Warning Signs)

A healthy tree is a beautiful asset. A dangerous tree is a liability waiting to happen. In Metro Manila, where typhoons bring 100+ kph winds, knowing how to spot a hazardous tree could prevent serious damage — or save a life.

The 7 Warning Signs

1. Leaning Trunk

A tree that has recently started leaning or leans more than 15 degrees is a concern. Look for exposed roots on the opposite side, cracked soil around the base, and worsening lean over time.

Risk: High. A leaning tree with root disturbance can fall without warning, especially during rain.

2. Dead or Hanging Branches

Dead branches — leafless, brittle, peeling bark — can snap and fall anytime, even without wind. "Widow makers" (large dead branches caught overhead) are especially dangerous.

Risk: Moderate to high. Even a 5 cm branch falling from 10 meters can cause serious injury.

3. Trunk Cracks and Cavities

Deep cracks indicate structural weakness. Large cavities extending more than 1/3 around the trunk circumference are serious. Tap the trunk — if large sections sound hollow, get a professional assessment.

Risk: Moderate to high.

4. Fungal Growth at the Base

Mushrooms, bracket fungi, or shelf-like growths indicate internal decay. The tree may look healthy outside while rotting inside.

Risk: Moderate. Not an immediate emergency but needs professional inspection.

5. Root Damage or Exposure

Roots cut by construction, exposed by erosion, or showing decay compromise stability. If more than 40% of roots are damaged, the tree is at serious risk.

Risk: High. Trees near new driveways, patios, or utility trenches are especially vulnerable.

6. Multiple Trunks with Narrow V-Crotch

Trees splitting into two trunks from a narrow V-junction are structurally weak at the split. Common in rain trees and acacias in Metro Manila. Cabling can sometimes save these trees.

Risk: Moderate. Prone to splitting during storms.

7. Sudden Leaf Drop or Canopy Die-Back

Sudden leaf loss outside normal cycles, or large sections of canopy dying from tips inward, indicates serious stress. A stressed tree is weaker and more vulnerable to wind damage.

Risk: Low to moderate. Sometimes reversible with proper care.

What to Do

  1. Stay away during storms and high winds. Keep vehicles clear of the fall zone.
  2. Get a professional assessment — Most tree care professionals offer free assessments.
  3. Don't ignore it — Early intervention is always cheaper than damage repair.
  4. Check your insurance — Policies may not cover damages from known hazardous trees you didn't act on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a tree is about to fall?

Immediate signs: sudden increase in lean, cracking sounds from the trunk, soil heaving around the base, roots visibly lifting. If you notice these during a storm, evacuate immediately.

Who is responsible if my neighbor's tree falls on my property?

Tree owners are generally liable under Civil Code negligence provisions. If the tree was visibly hazardous and they failed to maintain it, they may be responsible. Document the condition with photos.

How much does dangerous tree removal cost?

P5,000-P25,000 in Metro Manila depending on size, location, and complexity. Trees near structures or power lines require careful sectional dismantling, which costs more.
