Few plants say Philippine summer like bougainvillea, or bogambilya, spilling over a gate in magenta, orange or white. It is tough, drought-tolerant and loves our heat. Yet one of the most common questions we hear is why a bougainvillea that looked spectacular in the nursery now produces nothing but green leaves.

The good news: once you understand what it likes, bougainvillea is one of the easiest flowering plants to grow here.

What bougainvillea needs

Full sun

Bougainvillea needs at least five to six hours of direct sun a day, and more is better. In shade it grows leggy and leafy and flowers poorly. This is the single biggest factor.

Less water than you think

It comes from dry climates and flowers best when it is slightly stressed. Water deeply, then let the soil dry out before watering again. Constantly wet soil causes root problems and endless leaves. In rainy season, plants in the ground usually need no extra water at all.

Free-draining soil

Heavy clay that stays wet is a problem. Plant in a raised bed, mix in coarse sand or compost, or grow it in a pot with good drainage holes.

The right fertiliser

Nitrogen makes leaves. Phosphorus and potassium support flowers. Use a fertiliser with lower nitrogen and higher phosphorus and potassium, and feed lightly. Our guide on how often to fertilise a garden covers timing.

Why your bougainvillea is not flowering

  1. Not enough sun. Move it, or prune nearby trees that shade it.
  2. Too much water. Let it dry out between waterings.
  3. Too much nitrogen. Lawn fertiliser nearby can be the culprit.
  4. Too much pruning at the wrong time. Cutting it hard just before it would bloom removes the new growth that carries flowers.
  5. Recently repotted or moved. Bougainvillea dislikes root disturbance and may sulk for a while.

Pruning for more blooms

The colourful parts are actually bracts, modified leaves around tiny white flowers, and they form on new growth. That makes pruning your best tool:

  • Prune right after a bloom cycle finishes, cutting back long shoots to shape the plant.
  • Pinch the tips of new shoots to make the plant bushier, with more tips to flower.
  • Remove dead and crossing branches to keep air moving through the plant.
  • Wear thick gloves. The thorns are sharp.

Our when to trim trees guide has more on timing cuts around the seasons.

Training bougainvillea

  • Over a gate or arch: tie the main stems to a sturdy frame and let side shoots cascade.
  • Flat on a wall: fix it to wire or a trellis, keeping it pruned close for a neat look. It is a great sun-loving option for a vertical garden.
  • As a hedge: plant in a row and clip regularly for a colourful, thorny barrier.
  • As a standard or bonsai: train a single trunk and prune the head into a ball, perfect in a large pot.

Growing bougainvillea in pots

Pots suit bougainvillea well, because the restricted roots encourage flowering. Choose a pot with large drainage holes, use a free-draining mix, place it in full sun and water only when the top of the soil is dry. Feed lightly through the growing season.

Bougainvillea in typhoon season

Its long, flexible stems can catch wind. Before typhoon season, trim back long shoots, check ties on arches and walls, and make sure heavy pots are not top-heavy. It usually bounces back quickly after a storm.

Help with your flowering plants

If your bougainvillea or other flowering plants have stopped performing, regular pruning and feeding usually fixes it. Our monthly garden maintenance covers pruning, feeding and shaping, and you can see your fixed monthly price online in a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my bougainvillea not flowering?

The usual causes are too little sun, too much water, or too much nitrogen fertiliser, which all push leaf growth instead of flowers. Move it to full sun, let the soil dry between waterings, and switch to a fertiliser higher in phosphorus and potassium.

How often should I water bougainvillea in the Philippines?

Water deeply, then let the top of the soil dry out before watering again. In the ground that may mean only during long dry spells; in pots, every few days in summer. Constantly wet soil is the fastest way to stop flowering.

When should I prune bougainvillea?

Prune right after a flowering cycle ends. Bougainvillea flowers on new growth, so a light prune encourages fresh shoots and the next flush of colour. Avoid heavy cutting just before you expect it to bloom.

Can bougainvillea grow in a pot?

Yes, and many people find it flowers better in a pot because the roots are slightly restricted. Use a pot with good drainage holes, a free-draining mix, and full sun.
